"Code Red"

"On August 27, 2011, the Billabong Pro Tahiti event on surfing's World Tour was placed on hold due to a massive swell bearing down on the famed big-wave spot, Teahupoo. With forecasts calling for unprecedented surf, some of the greatest surfers in the world descended on the island to be in the water, despite a "Code Red" called by the Tahitian Coast Guard, which sought to keep everyone on shore. See the historic day through the eyes of two surfers -- the young gun Laurie Towner and the veteran Dylan Longbottom -- as they catch some of the biggest, most dangerous surf ever recorded, much of it captured with the super slow motion Phantom Camera for never-before-seen imagery." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIBgWI_BTyM

Teahupoo

Here is a great little documentary on a day at Teahupoo. One of the most majestic and heavy waves in the world, it never gets old watching people take on the wall of skulls!

Rip Curl Cup 2013: Expression Session

Swell came in but it wasn't up to the competition standard. The surfers got to surf 4-5ft uncrowded waves as part of an expression session.

“I was really fired up for this expression session today,” said first-time invitee Mark Healey (Hawaii). “I've only had a chance to surf Padang once before on a crowded 4-5 foot day, so I'm just happy to surf it uncrowded. It's an incredible wave. If I can get an hour uncrowded out here I'm a happy man.”

The forecast is calling for competition waves this Saturday, stay tuned for a live feed!

Well two Californian surfers have just set a new record on riding a wave. They headed up to New Brunswick, Canada to the Petitcodiac River. They surfed the tidal bore created by the opening of the causeway gates in Moncton. A Lesson in Surf Fins!

Ever want to know more about fin choice and selection?? Choosing the right fin type is crucial to being able to ride how you want! The great thing about modern boards is the versatility found in surfing fins.
Old boards had glassed on fins and your fin selection was pretty much limited to what the shaper glassed on The FCS fin systems along with other fin systems made today, allow total control over fin choice and placement. Whether you ride a quad, thruster or a huge single fin check out SURFER Magazines article on fins and fin placement!

2013 Surfing Walk of Fame Immortalizes Seven New Surf Legends at 20th Annual Ceremony in Huntington

PRESS RELEASE

In the shadow of the US Open of Surfing, Surf City USA's Main Street was blocked off to honor the newest class of inductees to the Surfing Walk of Fame on Thursday morning. Through a selection ballot, a host of respected surf industry veterans, former professionals and surf journalists narrowed down a field of hundreds of candidates to name the seven 2013 Surfing Walk of Fame's honorees in their respective categories - Taylor Knox (Surf Champion), Donald Takayama (Surf Pioneer), Jack McCoy (Surf Culture), Keala Kennelly, Sharron Weber (Women of the Year), Roy Crump (Local Hero) and Father Christian Mondor (Honor Roll).

"It's amazing to think back 20 years ago when we laid the first stone in the cement here for Duke Kahanamoku," emcee, former World Champion and previous SWOF inductee Peter 'PT' Townend addressed to the crowd. "Now, we're up to 120 stones."

After a brief presentation to Mayor Jean Hay of Manly, Australia in recognition of Manly and Huntington Beach joining together as sister cities, this year's inductees were honored one by one.
"I used to call Donald Takayama the Happy Hawaiian," Townend said of the late surfer/shaper during a heartfelt moment. "He came here as a young boy from Hawaii and started shaping surfboards. Everyone knows him as a shaper but he's also a surfing champion."

Takayama's widow Diane confirmed: "Surf Pioneer is the best title. Donald really did it all."
Taylor Knox's induction as Surf Champion was the morning's highlight. Knox humble approached the stage to resounding applause and addressed his fellow inductees and a capacity crowd on Main Street.
"The message for today is how lucky we are to be one ocean tribe," Knox said. "We get to travel and see beautiful places. And that spirit is so prevalent and has never been lost."

The Surf Culture honor went to legendary filmmaker Jack McCoy. Known for his high-quality surf movies, McCoy's resume includes Tubular Swells (1976), Bunyip Dreaming (1990), The Green Iguana (1992), The Sons of Fun (1993), The Occumentary (1998), Sabotaj (1998), Blue Horizon (2004), Free as a Dog (2006) and his latest A Deeper Shade of Blue (2012), among others.

Keala Kennelly and Sharron Weber shared this year's Woman of the Year award. Kennelly, a multiple XXL winner, has been on the global big-wave scene since retiring from full-time ASP competition in 2007. Weber was a former U.S. Champion and World Champion throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.
"There's two things you want when you come to Huntington Beach," Kennelly said. "You want to win the U.S. Open and have your name in the pavement. Now I have both."

Also honored in this year's ceremony, longtime HB surfer Roy Crump was recognized as the Local Hero. And Huntington Beach's surfing priest Father Christian Mondor earned the Honor Roll spot.
The Surfing Walk of Fame is the only tribunal in surfing to award specific categories as well as require a 10-year margin since the commemorating achievement. This year's recipients are now cemented alongside past inductees, earning their immortal place in the pavement on the corner of PCH and Main Street, directly across from the famous pier in Surf City USA -- Huntington Beach, California.

Past recipients of the Surfing Walk of Fame honors include Duke Kahanamoku, Kelly Slater, Lisa Anderson, Tom Curren, Bruce Brown, Eddie Aikau and more. For additional information go to www.surfingwalkoffame.com

A Hundred Miles to The End

Long Island is known for its surfing and that's a good thing. It may not have to most consistent, perfect gnarly waves. The best times of the year may be when you're freezing in a thick wet-suit. But I don't think a Long Islander would change that. That is what makes the place special.

Everyone who wants to get a vibe for how awesome this place really is needs to check out A Hundred Miles to The End. Pulled from their Facebook page "Follow a lifelong Surfer as he re-visits the places he used to surf over his 48 years of surfing on Long island. Starting at Western Long Island and heading East to The End."

Here's the trailer giving just a taste of the LI goodness.

Some Good in the World

Jamie O'Brien makes a wish come true for this kid! There is some good in the world! Check him out at pipeline crushing barrels and granting wishes!

Stewart Hydro Hull

The Stewart Hydro Hull is the epitome of a classic longboard. What made the Hydro Hull so popular then and still today is the awesome performance from the beveled rails and the single to double concave bottom.

Full length edges lifted by the bevel along the rail make for speed down the line and strong drive out f turns. The V with the double concave on the bottom makes rail to rail changes fast and effortless so the more advanced surfer will have no trouble with a hard bottom turn.

Fast, stable, maneuverable, responsive and fun, this board can handle everything from overhead barrels to ankle high nothing. This board is ideal for an surfer skill level or wave condition.

Here is GSI's take on the board!
And some guy shredding on it!

Lost V2 Stub

The East Coast slop has met its match from ...Lost again! The V-2 Stub will combat those crowded sloppy days.

The board's nose wide, flat and full. Rocker is much flatter on this and will cause the board to generate speed nicely. Combine this with a lot of volume and it creates a board that really feels like a rocket even in those small powerless waves. The board is available in multiple glasses, including EPS and SuperSap Epoxy along with a five fin configuration. Get out and try it!

Walden Magic Model

The Walden Magic Model is the original "modern" longboard and one of the worlds most popular boards from Walden. Capable of riding both large and small waves you can't go wrong with it.

The hull has a unique design, the top half being concave which turns to a double concave toward the end of the board. Its got tough rails the will be very durable. The concave nose is perfect for nose riding with its lift and stability.

The board can come in a variety of flavors. First off it can be ridden as a 2+1 or with a long single fin. There are a bunch of glassing options as well. The most popular being a standard PU technology. Next lighter than PU and a little more rigid, is the SLX epoxy. Also, the newest and lightest performance model is the FutureFlex Model. The board has an EPS core and combines that construction with carbon fiber on the rails adding a springyness that isn't found in other boards. This allows for drive out of turns. The most durable of the Magic Models is the X2 shell, which has a hard epoxy around the board great for the beginner or the clumsy surfer.

Get out and ride this board, its a great ride!

Vans US Open of Surfing

Check out the live stream of the even hear at Huntington Beach California right here through the whole event!

Oakley Pro Bali

The Oakely Pro at Bali was an awesome showing of surf. Red Bull produces some of the most progressive videos in the game today. The following video show's the great range of emotions that took place at this event. Check it out!!

Channel Islands- Fred Rubble

This is the board of the year. Everyone has one and everyone should have one. Nearly every pro on tour has ridden one. But what makes this board so special???

It's different than a lot of other boards. It has a low entry rocker and a wider outline. It has slightly more volume than other boards in its class yet it isn't a short and chunky board like others. The board shines in waist high to a little over head. It doesn't necessarily need steep faced very punchy waves to be ridden effectively. The rounded tail allows for drive and maneuverability for driving off waves. The board can be ridden as a thruster, quad or five fin setup and is a blast to ride. If Kelly is riding it you know its a good board!

Get out and go shred!

Lost Couch Potato Surfboard

Ahhh the summer flat spell. You're a student who's free time skyrockets in the summer yet as murphy's law states, there are no waves to be ridden. That sweet shortboard you own makes a better wall ornament then wave shredder. But you don't want the hassle of lugging around a longboard.

Cue the Lost Couch Potato. The ultimate lazy mans shortboard. It's a short, fat and wide board that can still turn. The board has a pretty flat rocker throughout helping it pick up speed. The wider nose helps get into waves with no umph behind them. But it shines in powerless surf, still proving to be maneuverable. Depending on how you want it to handle the board can be ridden with nearly any fin setup, anywhere from a classic thruster to a five fin setup. Its truly a versatile board! Go check it out at your local shop!

Modern Longboards Old Skool 10'

A classic ride is hard to come by nowadays. Modern Longboards by Global Surf Industries is trying to bring them back. The Old Skool model is a modern take on the classic noserider.

This board is a dedicated noserider featuring 60/40 rails and a huge 7" squaretail. The nose also features a deep single concave set and the tail is sporting a huge single fin. The board also makes use of Global Surf Industries SLX epoxy technology. This creates a lightweight, agile board that still maintains its strength to be ridden.

Aesthetically this board is gorgeous to look at and really does justice to the classic noserider.

Here is what Global Surf Industries has to say on the board!

NSP 7' 2" Funboard

NSP surfboards are known for their bulletproof reliability and very competitive pricing. This leads to the perfect beginner board. Everyone's first surfboard gets beat up and the bombproof NSP Epoxy help to ease these beginners damages.

Today we're riding an NSP funboard. Its got a nice full nose with a lot of float behind it to make an easy board to learn on. The board has a full rail creating a more forgiving environment for the beginning surfer. This board is a beginners dream.

But what about the surfer who isn't a beginner anymore?

The board still can ride. It's not a soft sponge top that will get water logged and heavy after a few rides. The board can turn and hold its line on the face of the wave. The response isn't as great as a higher performance board but it can still turn. It's a good board for those surfers who don't want to buy a longboard for those choppy small days. Overall, its a fun board to ride!

Here is GSI's video on the NSP Surfbetty. The same board only for the ladies.

McTavish Fireball Evolution

The McTavish Fireball Evolution is an awesome High Performance Longboard. Coming in a variety of flavors we got the 9'1" PU board to ride. However the board can be had anywhere from 9' to 10' 2" long and come in an SLX high performance epoxy. We've heard that the SLX epoxy, though lighter weight and higher performance, is slightly less durable. Some other technical features include a 3-stage rocker profile, rounded pin-tail, 60/40 rails, double concave tail, single concave nose, nose bevels to aid stability and solid a 6x6x6oz lamination.

But on to how it rides. This board is awesome. Does everything you want in a longboard and more. It has enough float to surf ankle high slop but can still hang with the bigger waves. The board trims its speed nicely allowing for the rider to express themselves on the board and cruise in style. Overall, this is an  awesome board.

Here's an interview with Bob McTavish, creator of the Fireball Evolution!
